WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A small food pantry is now open at Winston-Salem State University, stocked with breakfast and dinner staples, canned vegetables, boxes of macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and snacks.

Established through $3,000 worth of donations from Food Lion, the pantry in the Thompson Center is an extension of the Rams Helping Hands initiative that’s focused on relieving food insecurity among college students and shaping socially conscious leaders.

The pantry is also an acknowledgement, Chancellor Elwood Robinson said, that the campus is a microcosm of the communities from where many of its students come.

The goal is serving at least 20 students weekly, with the expectation that the number will likely grow as word spreads, as potential recipients are identified, and as more students run out of money before the end of the semester.
