FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — Thousands of drivers in Forsyth County and across North Carolina have lost their license because the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles didn’t update its records, Forsyth County Clerk of Court Susan Frye said, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

“We’ve had people lose their jobs over this,” Frye said Friday.

In an emailed statement, DMV Commissioner Kelly Thomas said the DMV has been dealing with a backlog of court actions that need to be added to DMV driver records. That backlog has been dealt with, Thomas said.

But another problem has cropped up. DMV officials have not accurately processed error reports, which are generated when court records don’t match up with DMV driver records, Thomas said.

That has resulted in an investigation by the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General, which is still pending, Thomas said in the email.

The bottom line is that thousands of drivers may have lost their driver’s licenses through no fault of their own. It’s not clear exactly how many people have been affected.
