WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Microfibres Inc. said it is ending its U.S. manufacturing presence, including in Winston-Salem, in response to domestic and global textiles challenges that could lead to a bankruptcy filing, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

Microfibres, based in Pawtucket, R.I., has a plant at 3821 Kimwell Drive in Winston-Salem where it has 125 employees, according to Steve Trastelis, general manager of the local plant and a corporate vice president of operations. The local workforce is down from 270 as recently as 2004.

The company makes high-performance, stain-resistant flocked fabrics for the upholstery, furniture and specialty products markets.

Trastelis said employees were told Tuesday of the decision to close the plant, which could take place by the end of the week.
