WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A former girls’ basketball coach at Reynolds High School pleaded guilty on Wednesday to having sex with a student and getting her pregnant, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
During an interview with a police recruiter in 2015, the student said that she and Darrele Mitchell, 33, had sex in 2012 when he was the girls’ varsity basketball coach.
Mitchell was initially charged with felony sex offense with a student and indecent liberties with a student, but he rejected a plea deal and the trial was scheduled for this week.
The judge gave him an active sentence of 120 days in jail with two suspended sentences. He was also given 36 months of supervised probation.
He worked as a media assistant and boys’ basketball coach at West Forsyth High School before he was suspended on June 8, 2015. He resigned several days later.
Mitchell has to register as a sex offender for 30 years.
