STOKES COUNTY, N.C. — Citing a lack of healthy and able varsity-level players, the North Stokes football program decided to end its 2016 varsity season, effective immediately, athletic director Michael Richardson announced Tuesday afternoon, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
Led by third-year head coach Mitch Reeves, North Stokes was scheduled to take on Mount Airy this Friday night and then, following a bye week on Oct. 7, had four remaining games against Northwest 1-A conference members Walkertown, Winston-Salem Prep, East Surry and Atkins to end the year.
The Vikings, who were off to a 0-6 start and had been outscored by an average of 33.5 points per game, will be forced to forfeit the remainder of their games, finishing 0-11 for the third time in the past four years.
North Stokes will continue with its JV program for the remainder of the season, but dropping the varsity program and forfeiting the final five games of 2016 was a necessary evil, according to Richardson.
