WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A warrant obtained by the Winston-Salem Journal reveals the charges a driver faces after hitting someone with his race car at Bowman Gray over the weekend.

Joe Ryan Osborne, 20, of Huntersville, is charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, accused of assaulting Randall Scott Smith and David Odell Hill by spinning the tires of his car and doing donuts in the crowded pit area.

The warrant said Smith was struck by Osborne's car and although Hill jumped out of the way, he injured his thumb during the incident.

Osborne claims his actions were self-defense. He said people were attacking him and no police officers were there to stop it, so he hit the gas to get away. He said he never intended to hit anyone.

Osborne is scheduled to appear in Forsyth County District Court on July 19.
